Abstract: A microfluidic chip based on multiphase laminar flow separation coupled to ion selective electrode detection was developed for the first time. The system was applied to the determination of potassium in serum, employing a multiphase laminar flow approach for separation of potassium ions from the serum matrix by diffusion into a buffer acceptor stream. Both sample and acceptor streams were driven by gravity, and potassium was determined by using an ion selective electrode integrated on the chip.
