Abstract: The lyotropic cholesteic liquid crystalline phase was observed in the dichloroacetic acid solutions of the three chitosans with different molecular weights from 2.34106 to 0.44106 but with the same degree of deacetylation. The critical concentration of chitosan decreased when its molecular weight increased and was higher than chitin with the same degree of polymerization. The value of average pitch obtained by both small angle light scattering and polarized microscopy decreased when the molecular weight of chitosan increased.

Key words: Chitosan, Molecular weight, Lyotropic liquid crystal, Cholesteic phase, Degree of deacetylation
