Abstract: The chitosan-fibroin semi-IPNmembranes have been prepared and the pHand ion sensitivities as well as the reversibility of swelling between the different pHbuffer solutions have been studied. The results showed that the water swelling ratios of the semi-IPNmembranes increased dramatically when pH <3.3 and the semi-IPNmembrane showed better pHsensitivity than the uncrosslinked chitosan fibroin blend membrane. It also showed that the appearance of the maximum swelling ratio of semi-IPN membranes at pH=2 was related to the composition of membrane and the content of crosslinking agent. In the meantime, the membrane could swell and contract when pHwas alternately changed and the reversibility was rather good.In addition, the water swelling ratio was larger in the trivalent ion solution than those in the monovalent and the bivalent ion solutions with the same ionic strength.
