Abstract: Abiodegradable functional polymer, poly [(sodium acrylate)-co-(4-vinylpyridine][P(SA-co-4VP)] was prepared by free-radical copolymerization. The relationship between polymer composition, molecular weight and polymer properties including biodegradability, dispersity, and complex performance was examined. It was found that the biodegradability of P(SA-co-4VP) increased as the content of 4-vinylpyridine in the copolymer increased. The introduction of a small amount of 4-vinylpyridine group into the main chain of polymer was found to be efficient to enhance the biodegradability and to maintain the original functionality provided that the molecular weight of P(SA-co-4VP) was appropriate.

Key words: Poly[(sodium acrylate)-co-(4-vinylpyridine)], Biodegradability, Sequestration, Dispersity
