Abstract: The extraction of gold from aqueous hydrochloric acid solution with α-heptyl pyridine in benzene was investigated. The composition of the extracted species in liquid state is found to be 1:2 (Au/HpPy) from the slope analysis data, but the composition of extracted species in solid state is found to be 1:1 (Au/HpPy) from chemical analysis. The infrared spectral and 1H NMRspectral results indicate that the ion-paired extracted complex may occur in the organic phase.
