Abstract: Dealumination and silicon insertion of zeolites (Y, ZSM-5 and Beta) in an aqueous solution of NH4BF4 were investigated. The products were characterized by using various techniques such as XRD, IR, NMR, TPDand XRF. It is demonstrated that dealumination and silicon insertion occur definitely during this treatment. The Si/Al ratio is increased and the acidity is decreased with increasing the concentration of NH4BF4 used. In this process substitution of B for the framework elements does not occur and the process is proven to be a useful method for monitoring the Si and Al siting in the zeolites.

Key words: NH4BF4, Dealumination-silicon insertion, Thermal stability, Acidity
