Abstract: The interaction mechanisms of bilirubin/biliverdin with some metal ions in basic aqueous solution were investigated with spectral and electrochemical methods. It was found that the interaction between bilirubin/biliverdin and metal ions was affected by various factors such as reaction medium, etc.In the presence of oxygen, bilirubin/biliverdin can be directly (or catalytical-ly) oxidized by some metal ions, however, when oxygen was absent, they were not oxidized by some metal ions but complexed with them.In this paper, the composition, structure and stability of these complexes were researched, and the catalytic reaction mechanism concerned was discussed.
