Abstract: An indirect method for the determination of sulfide was developed. The method is based on the cold mercury vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CMVAAS). Sulfide(S2-) was first transformed into mercury sulfide precipitation by reacting with mercury ion(Hg2+) in an aqueous solution and then was determined indirectly by measuring mercury content in the precipitate by CMVAAS. It was shown that the method is sensitive and quite specific. The method has been conveniently employed to determine sulfide in natural water.

Key words: Cold mercury vapor atomic absorption spectrometry, Sulfide, Mercury sulfide
