Abstract: Poly(p-dioxanone)(PPDO) is one of most promising biodegradable materials, however its application was restricted because the rigorous synthetic condition and longer reaction time were needed in order to obtain products with a high molecular weight by common ring-opening polymerization. In this work, a new approach was developed by chain extending of dihydroxyl-terminated PPDO prepolymer(HPPDO) using hexamethylenediisocyanate(HDI) as the chain extender in order to obtain high molecular weight PPDO in a short time. HPPDO was prepared by ring-opening polymerization of p-dioxanone(PDO) catalyzed by SnOct2 and initiated by 1,4-butanediol(BD). The results obtained show that HPPDO prepolymers can react with Hexamethylenediisocyanate effectively, and the molecular weights of the resulting chain-extended products increase several decade times in less than one hour compared with the prepolymers. The highest viscosity-average molecular weight of the resulting polymer can reach 257000 g/mol. Both the prepolymer and the chain extended product were characterized by 1H NMR.
