Abstract

Abstract: The effects of 10 different ions on the metastable zone width and the nucleation characteristic parameters of aqueous K₂SO₄ solution are investigated. It is observed that the metastable zone widths are increased in the presence of Li⁺,Cr³⁺,Al³⁺,Fe³⁺ and decreased in the presence of Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺,Mn²⁺, Mg²⁺ and do not greatly change in the presence of Na⁺ and NH₄⁺. The influence of impurities on the metastable zone width may be the result of their effects on the specific surface energy σ₁₂, the nucleation energy △G(r^*) and the rate of crystal growth.
