Synthesis and Characterization of Liquid Crystal Metal Benzoporphyrins

Abstract: In this paper, we describe a much improved synthetic procedure that leads to two new LCbenzoporphyrin──the hitheto unreported p-n-alkoxyl-phenyl-benzoporphyrin.We find out that the appearance and the temperature range of a liquid crystalline phase depend on the length of the side chains.This temperature range is wider than that of octaethanol-porphyrin, These compounds melt to isotropic liquids well below their decomposition point and exhibit a relatively lower viscosity than LC phthalocynine, columar discotic mesophase.
