Abstract: Aseries of single-chain naphthalene containing amphiphiles, C.Naph(2,6)C4N+ (CH3)3 (n= 16,12,7,4), C12Naph(2,6)C4N+(CH3)2CH2CH2OHandC12Naph(2,6)PO4- were systematically synthesized. The aggregate morphology of the amphiphiles in dilute aqueous solution was observed by electron microscopy. The gel-to-liquid crystal phase transition of the bilayer membranes was studied by means of differential scanning calorimmetry(DSC).1H NMRresults of the aqueous bilayers are used to investigate the molecular motion in the membranes. The self-organization properties are discussed for the series of amphiphiles in dilute aqueous solution.
