Abstract: In this paper, the surface photovoltage technique (SPV) was applied to the study of the pho-tovoltic and gas sensitive properties of 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane polycrystal. It was found that SPVshowed two peaks at 390 nm(P1) and 480 nm(P2) in the ultraviolet-visible region, and they are opposite in phase. The results of gaseous adsorption reveals that P1 shows a characteristics of acceptor, while P2 shows that of donor. During the adsorption, the donor gas interacts with conjugate H* orbital, while the acceptor gas with C≡Nradical.
