Abstract: Zinc blende CdS nanocrystals with a size about 5 nm were synthesized using 3-mercaptopropionic acid and cadmium acetate as precursor directly via hydrothermal synthesis method. Narrow size-distribution nanocrystals were produced by controlling some main affecting factors. The nanocrystals emit highly symmetric fluorescence. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, and fluorescence excitation and emission spectroscopy were used to characterize the chemical composition, size, shape, structure and photophysical property of the product. The zinc blende CdS might be of potential value in bio-imaging area.
