Studies on Synthesis, Characterization and Properties of meso-Tetrakis(3-alkoxyphenyl)porphyrins and Their Copper(Ⅱ) Complexes

Abstract: meso-Tetrakis(3-alkoxyphenyl)porphyrin[meso-T(3-ROP)PH2]were synthesized by the condensation of 3-alkoxybenzaldehydes with pyrrole, reacted with copper(Ⅱ) acetates to form the corresponding complexes[meso-T(3-ROP)PCu]. Among them there are sixteen new compounds. For the first time, meso-T(3-ROP)PH2 and meso-T(3-ROP)PCu were generated as crystals or solids. Molecular structures of all the synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, UV, 1H NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscope were used to probe the liquid crystal properties of the serial compounds. Thirteen compounds were found to exhibit liquid crystal properties. However, they displayed as heating monotropic liquid crystals. The effects of alkoxy chains, metal ions of complexes and molecular space structure on the liquid crystal properties were investigated.
