Abstract: Sulfonated polypropylene membranes loaded with different kinds of counter-ions were prepared by heterogenous chlorosulfonation reaction of polypropylene membrane followed by hydrolysis and ion-exchange reaction. The membranes were used for selective separation of ethanol/water mixture by pervaporation. The effects of counter-ion species, ion-exchange capacity, solution composition, thickness of membrane and temperature on the separation behavior of the membrane were investigated. Micro-structure and morphology of the membrane were examined by X-ray and SEM.
