Abstract: p-Diethynylbenzene was polymerized in the presence of cobalt-phosphine in diethylamine at room temperature with the yield of ca. 73.0% and the poly(p-diethynylbenzene) was obtained with the molecular weight of 11000. The polymers, being highly soluble in common organic solvents, possess the structure containing π conjugated linear polyenes as the main chain as well as p-ethynylbenzene component as pendant groups and emit intense fluorescence at 451.8 nm excited at UVlight in a toluene solution at room temperature.

Key words: p-Diethynylbenzene, Polymerization, Cobalt catalyst
