Abstract: γ-alumina porous membranes without pinholes or cracks were prepared by sol-gel process. The boehmite sol obtained from hydrolysis of aluminum tri-sec-butoxide was applied to porous α-alumina support by a dipping procedure. The effect of sol properties such as viscosity and concentration on the membrane performance was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction and nitrogen ad-sorption-desorption(BET).It was found that the resulted γ-alumina membrane with nanoscale pore size and a narrow pore size distribution exhibited a preferential orientation structure in which the (110) crystal face of γ-alumina membrane paralleled to the support surface.
