Abstract: The fruits of Schisandra chinensis(Turcz.) Baill. is a traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of cough, dyspnea, insomnia and chronic hepatitis. During our investigation of Schisandra chinensis collected in Liaoning province, the water soluble extract of Schisandra chinensis(Turcz.) Baill was found to possess a strong activity on cardiovascular system. Some water soluble chemical constitutents from this species were reported in our earlier paper. In continuation of our studies on the seeds of Schisandra chinensis, a new monoterpenoid glycoside, named Schisanchinin A(1), was isolated from the water soluble extract through column chromatography. The spectroscopic and chemical evidences revealed its structure to be p-menthane-1,8,9-triol 9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(1).

Key words: Magnoliaceae, Schisandra chinensis, Monoterpenoid glycoside
