Synthesis and Photochromism Property of Three Naphthacenequinone Phenolic Resins

Abstract: Three naphthacenequinone photochromic phenolic resins, naphthacenequinone phenolic resin(2), methyl-naphthacenequinone phenolic resin(3) and chloro-naphthacenequinone phenolic resin(4) were synthesized by an one-step method, i.e. the reaction between 6-chloro-5,12-naphthacenequinone(1) and phenolic resins. The polymers have similar photochromic properties in THF solution with photochromic compound 6-phenoxy-5,12-naphthacenequinone. It was found that the substituents attaching to the main chain backbone of the polymer have a slight effect on the reaction and rate of photoisomerization of polymers. The rate constants were influenced by the molecular weight.
