Abstract: Anew n-hexadecyl-β-D-xylopyranoside(1) and a known compound cholest-5-en-3β-ol(2),were isolated from the red alga Laurencia karlae Zhang et Xia collected from the Nashan Islands in the South China Sea.Compound 1 is a white solid,C21H42O5,m.p.94.0~95.0℃,[a]D=-25.0℃(CHCl3,c 0.032).The structure of 1 was determined on the basis of elemental analysis,IR, MS,1H NMR,13C NMR,(DEPT),and 13C NMRdata in comparison with the known compounds.

Key words: Red alga, Laurencia karlae Zhang et Xia, Xyloside, n-Hexadcyl-β-D-xylopyranoside, Cholest-5-en-3β-ol
