Abstract: Asingle-chain ammonium amphiphile(ANQU) which contains the anthraquinone chromophore formed stable bilayer membranes in water. The absorption and fluorescence spectra show the aggregate structure. The absorption spectra of ANQUaqueous sample show a considerable red shift relative to that observed in organic media(ethanol).Large red shift is also observed in the gel state, in contrast to that in liquid-crystalline state. These results indicate that the molecular packing mode in bilayer is J-aggregate, which is explained by the head-to-tail anthraquinone chromophore orientation. Both the fluorescence intensity and the peak location of anthraquinone chromophore are sensitively affected by the change in the bilayer physical state.
