Abstract: Two new zinc-metal-free bis-porphyrin dimers linked by a flexible alkoxy chain were synthesized.Their absorption spectra and steady-state fluorescence spectra show the existence of intramolecular energy transfer processes in these porphyrin dimers and the efficiency of the intramolecular energy transfer of the porphyrin dinner with electron-donating substituents at .meso-po-sition of phenyl of metal-free porphyrin is greater than that of the dimer with electron-withdrawing substituentes. It seems that the porphyrin dimer with a -OCH3 group at weso-position of phenyl of porphyrin is a better model of biological photosynthetic reaction.
