Abstract: The Poly(4-vinylpyridine)(P4VP) or Poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP)-Poly(styrene-maleic acid) (PSM)-palladium catalysts supported on silica were prepared. The structures of these catalysts were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and transmission and scanning electron microscopy etc.It is found that the catalysts were composed of both Pd(0) and Pd(Ⅱ) complexes, and the ratio of Pd(Ⅱ)/Pd(0) was affected by the presence of PSM.The palladium particles in the catalysts are well distributed on the carrier surface.

Key words: Palladium catalyst, Electron binding energy, Polyvinylpyridine
