Abstract: Benzyl alcohols containing a hydroxy or methoxy group on the benzene ring were treated with acetonitrile or acrylonitrile in the presence of sulfuric acid to give the corresponding amides in excellent yields, and bis-acetam ides were hydrolyzed, the corresponding diamines were produced and further condensed with salicylaldehyde to produce the expected Schiff bases.
