Abstract: Amphiphilic block copolymers of PS-b-PAA with a low polydispersity have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR and SEC. The micellization of PS-b-PAA in water have been monitored by fluorescent probe technique. It was found that pyrene as a fused-ring aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH) can be absorbed and further separated and recovered from water by using the PSb PAAmicelles. The results showed that the equilibrium loading of pyrene apparently depends on the length of the hydrophilic block and the concentration of the micelles. This work, therefore, displays a potential use of the micelles in the purification of waste water contaminated by aromatic compounds.
