Abstract: In this paper, the nephelauxetic effect of 5d levels of Tb3+ was considered. By using the rare-earth spectroscopy theory, the nephelauxetic effect ratio β was related to the energy difference between the spin-allowed fd and the spin-forbidden states of Tb3+ ion. By means of the chemical bond theory of complex crystals, a linear relationship between the nephelauxetic effect ratio β with the covalency, volume polarization of the chemical bond between the Tb3+ ion and the nearest anion, and charge presented by the nearest anion was obtained. In addition, a factor exhibiting the effect of Tb 3+ ion on β was presented.
