Abstract: The colour reactions of the vanadium (V) with thiocyanate and basic triarylmethane dyes such as crystal violet, malachite green, brilliant green, methyl violet and victoria blue 4Rin the presence of some surface active agents in aqueous solution were investigated. The reaction conditions and analytical characteristics of the system of vanadium (V)-thiocyanate-Crystal violet-arabic gum were studied in detail. This colour reaction has a very high sensitivity (ε530=2.55 × 105 L·mol-1.cm-1) and a favourable selectivity and so can be applied to spectrophotometric determination of micro amounts of vanadium in aluminium alloy.

Key words: Vanadium determination, Spectrophotometry, Thiocyanate and basic triarylmethane dyes
