Abstract: The zero-valent Sm on graphite has been prepared by the reduction of anhydrous SnCl3 with potassium graphite (C8K) in refluxing THFunder a purified nitrogen atmosphere. It showed a greater activity than commercial block Sm metal, and reacted with PhCOCl smoothly at r.t.to give the benzil 1, benzoin 2 and stibenediol dibenzoate 3.Compound 3 is the major product and the cis-form of 3 is the dominant among its geometrical isomers.

Key words: Zero-valent Sm, C8K, PhCOCl
