Abstract: Reimer-Tiemann reaction under phase transfer catalysis of poly (ethylene glycols) (PEG) has been studied. It has been shown that PEGhave an obvious catalytic effect on the reaciton and the ratio of the para- and ortho-products is abnormal. Such an abnormal Reimer-Tiemann reaction has not been reported in literature. The conditions of the abnormal Reimer-Tiemann reaction were studied in detail and a mechanism was proposed.
