Abstract: In this paper, the UV-Vis spectra of some 1, 4-bisβ-(4-substituted phenyl)-ethenyl] benzene derivatives in seventeen solvents or binary nonpolar mixed solvents (e.g., benzene-cyclohexane, bezene-n-hexane, carbon disulfide-cyclohexane, etc.) have been measured. In general, the absorption maxima λ_max have a bathochromic shift with increasing refractive index n of the solvent. Some linear relationships between v_max and n or (n₂ -1)/(2n₂ +1) are obtained, respectively.
