Abstract: The change of structure during the saponification of D2EHPA and other organophosphoric acid extractants has been studied. It was found that the saponification is a process of the formation of a microemulsion of water-in-oil type, while the extraction of rare earth ions is a process of ion exchange in the water-oil interface forming a metal chelate, thus destroying the microemulsion. When 100% saponified D2EHPA was used to extract divalent metal ions,we obtained extracted species of composition MA2,instead of M(HA2)2,thus doubling the extraction capacity of D2EHPA.
