Abstract: Triethyl benzyl ammonium chloride was used as the phase transfer catalyst in the preparation of diazomethane from chloform, hydrazine and sodium hydroxide. By this method the use of carcinogenic N-nitroso compound as the starting material was avoidable, and the yield were over 60%.
