Abstract: An experimental technique has been designed which allows time resolved in situ FT-IRspectroscopic measurement of the reduction of the SOCl2.SO2Cl2, SO·SOCl2, (SO)x, Cl3Al(←OSCl2)are observed as intermediates in the electrochemical reduction of SOCl2 on the Pt electrode. The results show that the intermediates are unstable and the further electrochemical reduction of SOCl2+2e→SO2+2Cl- is the rate determination step of SOCl2.According to the experimental result, the possibility of the electrochemical reduction steps of S2OCl2 is discussed.
